From Mom
Mom's children were never ready to consider her
mortality. But Mom was. She carefully prepared herself,
and tried to prepare us, for the day when she would be gone.
She drafted a will, assigned power of attorney, and declared a
living will. She gave each of her children a portrait of
herself to remember her by. And she moved into Lima Estates, a
community where she could cocoon on cold and snowy days, and which
could readily care for her when she became infirm.
In
fact, Mom even helped plan her own funeral. While she was still alive I
found in one of her bureaus the following note, long since
forgotten by Mom herself:
Hymns for my funeral
Be Not Afraid
How Great Thou Art
And after the death of a friend, Mom
had mentioned to Diane that she would like
"On Eagle's Wings" sung at
her funeral too. Mom's selections were honored at her burial
Mass. Too late to follow her
wishes, I found this note in Mom's safe deposit box:
If I die -
Do not cry -
I hope to get to heaven by and by!
Have a blast at my funeral - I am hoping all
relatives will get together and have a renewal of their former fun
relationships!
Sorry Mom – we did cry. But it was a
great get together with all our relatives and friends.
